One Deer is known to have served during the War of 1812. James Hardy Deer, Sr., who enlisted at the Marion County, South Carolina, courthouse on June 19, 1812. James served as a private in Major John Keith's 5th detachment of The South Carolina State Troops, Captain Samuel Bigham's Co. of Infantry. Nothing is known of his actual service and he was honorably discharged only 6 months later at Georgetown, South Carolina. This James Hardy, a brother of Mack Deer, moved to the Henderson County, Tennessee, area with his wife and children during the 1830's and finally settled there. Some of his descendents still live there to this day. |
